билеты поступят в продажу кде-то в конце ноября/начале декабря. цена в прошлом году: 175 евро за основной фест+ афтербёрнер (если мне не изменяет память). в след. году, походу, будет дороже, т.к. в голландии повысился какой-то налог, связанный с проведением таких мероприятий

распродатутся минут за 15 минут, я думаю... но вобщем-то народ их ближе к самому фесту начинает распродавать. но так ни разу не рисковал покупать.

Roadburn Headquarters is really excited to report that Agalloch, Sólstafir and 40 Watt Sun have been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2012.

Portland, Oregon’s Agalloch will bring their sweeping sonic landscapes conjuring desolate forests, icy waters and fire emerging from fog to Roadburn‘s main stage on Thursday, 12 April. The band’s highly atmospheric touchstones, which are equal parts dark ambient, drone, Nordic folk-infused black metal and dark wave, are as much a cinematic experience as a musical one. Agalloch‘s releases – four full-length albums and several EPs over the last 15 years – are a feast for the ears in the same way that Werner Herzog’s and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s visual imagery is a feast for the eyes. Marrow of the Spirit (2010) is a healing, spiritual journey through the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and one of last year’s most stunning statements in metal.

Iceland’s very own Sólstafir will appear on Friday, 13 April as part of the Roadburn Festival. Having emerged with a sound as dark as the volcanic ash spewed by their homeland’s volcanoes, the band has evolved to excel at blending atmospheric, angst-fueled post rock with their blackened heritage, underpinned by psychedelic phrasing and an eerily, hypnotic groove for a truly mind-expanding experience. Iceland’s endless white landscapes, glowering peaks, empty valleys and shrieking winds can be heard and felt through the band’s moving, sonic elements, too. Sólstafir have come a long way much in the same way that Enslaved has progressed, albeit somewhat differently, as showcased on Köld (hailed as a true masterpiece) and the forthcoming Svartir Sandar, the emotional equivalent of the stormy North Atlantic.

After calling it quits in 2009, Warning’s Patrick Walker returns with his new band 40 Watt Sun and we are really pleased to welcome the band for a one-off show on Saturday, 14 April. 40 Watt Sun‘s stunning debut album, The Inside Room, ranks among the very best Roadburn-related albums of 2011, and offers Walker’s distinctive melancholic voice a more prominent role. His soaring and somber pipes bless the album’s burning tracks. 40 Watt Sun‘s emotionally charged, slowcore hybrid of Jesu meets a harder edged Red House Painters put the band in a class of its own.

Roadburn is elated to announce that legendary doom pioneers The Obsessed will reunite to play the Roadburn Festival on Saturday, 14 April 2012. The band will be featuring the lineup from The Church Within; Scott “Wino” Weinrich on guitar/vocals, Greg Rogers (Goatsnake, Sonic Medusa) on drums and Guy Pinhas (Acid King, Goatsnake and Beaver) on bass.

There is no debating the impact that Wino has had (and continues to have) on the stoner scene, and The Obsessed is the band with which he developed his signature doom songwriting and guitar sound. Formed in Maryland in 1976 as Warhorse, they soon changed their name to The Obsessed. The original four man lineup was pared down to a power trio and they spent several years playing shows and honing their sound, culminating in the release of the Sodden Jackal 7″ in1983.

The band then went on hiatus as Wino joined Saint Vitus for a few years in the late ’80s. They reformed in 1990 with Wino joined by a rhythm section of Greg Rogers and Scott Reeder. The new lineup released Lunar Womb before Reeder left to join Kyuss. At that point Guy Pinhas joined as the bass player and the band was signed to Columbia Records and went on to release The Church Within.

The Church Within was Wino’s most critically hailed album. Despite being co-released by Hellhound Records and the major label Columbia Records, the music-buying masses were not ready to embrace doom in 1994 and instead fixated on buying records by rehashed pop-punk bands. Several factors led to The Church Within becoming The Obsessed‘s last full-length album. Despite not becoming a top-seller, the album remains hugely influential.

Wino has appeared at Roadburn in a number of guises, including: Saint Vitus, Shrinebuilder, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, and his eponymous band, Wino. His distinctive style of guitar playing and his seemingly endless supply of great riffs has earned him a place on the Mount Rushmore of stoner rock, and now we at Roadburn are thrilled to give you the opportunity to experience the band that started the legend.

Devil

We’re very pleased to report that occult rockers Devil have been confirmed for the Saturday Roadburn date, Saturday, 14 April, 2012 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Founded in 2009, Norway’s Devil are a return to the heyday of proto-metal. With a stripped down, vintage, melodic sound that recalls the likes of Black Sabbath, Pentagram and a more typical NWOBHM vibe of Witchfinder General, Devil‘s debut full-length,Time to Repent offers up tales of sorcery, evil women, open graves and all manner of good clean family fun with an utter and complete lack of pretense. On stage, Devil don’t attempt any overblown grandeur either, as the band relies instead on their swaggering doom, chuggy guitar riffs and their honest to god, pure garage-metal approach. All hail Devil!

Roadburn is very excited to announce that Norway’s avant-garde rock maestros Virus (Thursday, April 12th), Finland’s psychedelic, haunting, folk rock band Hexvessel (Friday, April 13th) and Finnish drone / occult / metal necromancers Dark Buddha Rising (Saturday, April 14th) will be playing Roadburn 2012.

Avant-garde rock maestros Virus, led by former Ved Buens Ende mastermind Carl-Michael Eide (a.k.a Czral), are one of the finest, most exquisite musical exports Norway has to offer at this very moment. Its very hard to describe the musical universe of Virus… think a vast spectrum of genres, ranging from psychedelic to krautrock and from rock via jazz to avant-metal, but all weird and trippy in an inexplicably elegant way… and then at the same time it’s really catchy, too!

Virus either smothers your inner demons, or gives them new life, as they pull you in all different directions. Their latest album, The Agent That Shapes The Desert, ranks amongst the very best metal albums of the year. To hell with the term progressive, what Virus does is beyond even futuristic — they are otherworldly, sublime.

Gavin Turner said: “Sometimes you hear an album for the first time and just know instantly that the music contained within is going to stay with you for the rest of your life. Dawnbearer is one of those albums.” Hexvessel released Dawnbearer in March with the cult, underground Finnish vinyl gurus Svart Records and since then it’s been making a fervent buzz in the music underworld, already scoring high on most people’s top ten lists of the year.

A psychedelic, haunting, folk rock band, founded by Englishman Mat “Kvohst” McNerney, known previously as a vocalist for avant blackmetal bands Dødheimsgard and Code, now living in Helsinki, Finland and joined by a coven of musicians from Tampere that feature members of Galacticka and Dark Buddha Rising. As Aquarius Records quite rightly said “his talents were wasted screeching and shrieking over black buzz,” and now he is deeply embroiled with his death-hippie cohorts in creating a witches brew of acoustic balladry and heavy tripped-out atmospherics that fuses late 1960s and early 1970s English folk and psychedelia with a love for Finnish nature, folklore and pagan mysticism.

Recalling the vibes of brethren like Woven Hand, Comus, Sixteen Horsepower, Burial Hex, Espers, Six Organs Of Admittance and and Mellow Candle but also forging their own unique and uncanny own special atmosphere where nature, magic and the wonder of the universe are called forth in a passionate, urgent and gorgeously strange musical spell. They dub their band The Death Magicians, they call their sound “Interior-world-music for secret ceremonies and forest rituals,” and they cite Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band and the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 as some of their biggest influences. Expect a wild trip that embraces the true nature and spirit of The Roadburn Festival.

Shrouded in mystery, with no biographical information available, Dark Buddha Rising are known only by their musical output. Their latest LP, Abyssolute Transfinite is an immense, sprawling dirge of doom metal and myriad cryptic incantations. Their unrelenting riffs underpin a variety of vocal intonements (choral singing, chants, screams, throat singing), luring the listener into a trance of doom-induced sensory depravation.

British proto-stoner rockers Leaf Hound will be making a triumphant and highly anticipated return to Roadburn for the 2012 festival. Led by original vocalist Pete French, Leaf Hound gets a chance to reprise their extraordinary 2006 Roadburn performance, this time playing their seminal Growers of Mushroom LP in its entirety.

One of the legendary heavy 70′s acts from England, and cited as a major influence by many current bands, Leaf Hound are still a powerful live band with their devastating show at Roadburn 2006 providing ample proof of their skills. They went on to release their Unleashed album in 2007 and have been celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2011.

Coroner хедлайнят афтербёрнер!

We are extremely excited to announce that Coroner will be bringing their amazingly tight brand of technical thrash metal to the 2012 Afterburner, set for Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Swiss legends Coroner picked up the thrash metal mantle in 1987 when Metallica went in a more pop direction and Megadeth began to succumb to their vices. They advanced the genre through amazing musicianship and by adding complex progressive / jazz musical elements like odd time changes and unusual modes, but always stayed true to the metal.

So advanced were the musical concepts that Coroner brought into their world of thrash metal, that their five records not only stand the test of time, but they transcend and expand the boundaries of the genre. Listening to them today is just as exhilarating and relevant as they were 20 years ago.

Not too bad for three guys that started out as the road crew for Celtic Frost, a band that got so good that they eventually had Tom G. Warrior do vocals on their Death Cult demo in 1986. By the time they switched to Ron Royce (bassist) handling the vocals, they were ready to unleash their first full-length R.I.P. onto the eagerly awaiting metal world. They followed that up with the classics Punishment for Decadence, No More Color, Mental Vortex and finally Grin.

Their sound evolved as they went along, eventually (on Grin) approaching Industrial metal territory, and they helped prolong the relevance of thrash metal in a world quickly turning its attention to grunge, grindcore, Swedish death metal and black metal. Coroner pushed the musical boundaries and kept their sound fresh and evolving, always displaying their amazing technical abilities and their memorable songwriting.

There is no doubt at all that Coroner will bring supreme metal chops as well as arsenal of amazing songs to their Roadburn show. For those that never got to to see them, this will be an education. For those that did, this should bring near-delirious anticipation of hearing some amazing metal.

Voivod named their curated event at Roadburn Festival 2012, Au-delà du Réel, after the band’s favorite sci-fi show, The Outer Limits, when it was broadcast in french during the 70s. As curator, Voivod will personally select the bands that will play during Au-delà du Réel, set for Friday, April 13 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Voivod‘s excited to announce that Sweden’s Anekdoten has been confirmed for Au-delà du Réel. Anekdoten ranks amongst the very best prog-bands to emerge from Scandinavia since the early 90s. Firmly rooted in King Crimson-inspired, Mellotron-drenched prog/art-rock (with hints of Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull as well), the band has released several acclaimed albums that garnered them a devoted cult-following over the years.

Anekdoten‘s strong points are constructing beautifull, dynamic interplay between Robbert Fripp-inspired howling electric guitars; an aggressive and propulsive bass; splendid drumwork and outerworldly Mellotron; and creating huge tension and release that will appeal heavily to the Roadburn attendees.

Gnod и Spiders

Today, we’re excited to announce that Gnod and Spiders have joined the lineup for Roadburn Festival 2012.

It’s really hard to pin down Salford UK’s psych/metal renegades Gnod, as their their distinctive take on psychedelia is not just otherworldly, but also grounded in terrestrial styles like Afro-beat, krautrock, drone, jazz, space rock and even dance music. Gnod excels at the illusion of repetition whereby its motorik rhythms underpin a myriad of shifting hypnotic textures. As of now, Gnod have released approx. twelve full-length albums, each seemingly materializing from the aether, as the band is surrounded in mysticism. Their lengthy live-jams are created by an ever changing cast, of which there is hardly any information available.

However, Gnod will leave their collective residency at Salford’s Islington Mill — a creative arts space where they live and rehearse — to fog our brains and eyeballs with a wash of hallucinations, while enticing our bodies to lose control to the propulsive, repetitive beats at the very same time. Gnod will play Roadburn 2012 on Friday, April 13th.

Fronted by Ann-Sofie Hoyles, along with Witchcraft-guitarist John Hoyles, Matteo Gambacorta (bass) and Ricard Harryson (drums), Gothenburg’s Spiders mix garage punk and hardrock with bluesy melodies, mining a vein of late 60′s psych that gets bulldozed by early metal and progressive rock. Spider‘s self-titled 10-inch (recorded with Graveyard’s Axel Sjöberg on drums) was very well received by Record Collector, and sold out almost immediately.

With our fondness for Swedish rock (we have invited the likes of Witchcraft, Graveyard, Dead Man, Horisont and Troubled Hourse et al, to previous festivals) it’s not surprising that Spiders are appearing at this years Roadburn… and not just because they are Swedish, because they are that good! Spiders will appear on Thursday, April 12th.

Necro Deathmort

Combining poisonous and massive riffs, dirty beats and crushing low end with huge banks of distorted synths, a touch of psychedelia, plus experimental, ambient soundscapes, UK’s Necro Deathmort has equal passion for electronic and extreme music. This London based duo have released two striking albums offering a new soundtrack to your nightmares, This Beat Is Necrotronic and Music of Bleak Origin — both are disturbing and soothing in equal measure.

If the names of Neurosis, Ulver, Atilla Csihar or Lustmord mean anything to you, then Necro Deathmort deserves to be on your radar as well, as their mix of the subtle and the extreme, the sublime and the physically repellent is just as remarkable as their peers. Necro Deathmort will perform on Saturday, April 14th.

Indomitable sludge / doom behemoths Fleshpress will be playing a one-off show at Roadburn 2012′s Afterburner, set to be held on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Combining massive riffs, searing vocals and tense atmospheric interludes, Finland’s Fleshpress is a must-see for the misanthropically inclined.

Fitting for a band named after a song on a Grief record, Fleshpress make malevolent, crushing music punctuated by snarling screams of pure hatred. Interspersing noise-riddled, forbidding ambience between bouts of neck-snapping riff assaults, they provide no solace for the timid and spasms of delirium for fans of filthy sludge and doom. We look forward to seeing the smoking crater they leave behind…

Chicago’s Bongripper invade Europe for the first time through the Roadburn 2012 Festival. The instrumental doom entity coalesced in 2005 and built a cult following through word of mouth of their seven self-releases. The band is set to record for two upcoming splits before working on their next full length.

Bongripper will be playing the first of two sets at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland on Saturday, April 14, 2012. Additionally, the band will perform its 2010 album, Satan Worshipping Doom in its entirety for a special Afterburner set on Sunday, April 15, 2012 at the 013 Venue. The heaviest D.I.Y. trio from Canada, Dopethrone, was born in 2008 in Hochelaga, Montreal’s trashiest Ghetto. Within the first year, they released their first opus: Demonsmoke, witch became one of Montreal’s best selling Doom album.

A year later, the band experienced some difficulties (Drummer change & lack of weed / beer / gas money) But that didn’t stop them, in march 2011 they released Dark Foil. That Second album ended up getting amazing reviews from around the globe, and of course, outselling the first one. With their slow, pulsating grooves running through the veins of Satan, Dopethrone encompass the bleakness of black metal, the steadfastness of New Orleans-style sludge, and a heavier-than-thou doom mentality. The riffs are thick, punishing, suffocating and destructive. The Demonic vocals are harsh, visceral and animal-like. And the mood is heavy and oppresive.

Dopethrone will play Voivod‘s Au-delà du Réel on Friday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Ulver‘s music career is a sonic kaleidoscopic epic that saw them start as a lo-fi black metal band, and then begin a continuous morphing through acoustic outsider folk, electronic ambient music, post-symphonic chamber music and electronic post-rock to their current sound which might be called goth / prog / electronic / experimental / art rock.

They are without question one of the most varied, unique and talented bands active today and Roadburn‘s colossally chuffed to welcome them to the 1967 edition of Roadburn, headlining on Thursday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Ulver cleave to a path of their own making, constantly carving out new sonic territories. They are by turns brilliant, perplexing, disconcerting, soothing, brooding, cogitative, thrilling and vexing. During the 1990′s they started with their “Black Metal Trilogy” (Bergtatt, Kveldssanger, Nattens Madrigal) which managed to run the gamut from primitive sounding black metal to folklore-inspired acoustic songs. They made their first major style shift with Themes from William Blake’s The Marriage of Heaven and Hell in which they incorporated elements of industrial and electronica and melded them to texts written by Blake.

The 2000′s found leader Kristoffer Rygg (Garm) assembling a completely new lineup based around programmer / keyboardist Tore Ylwizaker (who joined the band for Themes…) and Ulver was free to go off on their own unique musical path that resulted in an amazing array of styles: minimalist ambient works (Teachings in Silence), full-blown techno / electronica (Metamorphosis), electronic post-rock / trip hop (Perdition City), symphonic soundtrack music (A Quick Fix of Melancholy, Svidd Neger), complex psychedelic / avant-garde rock (Blood Inside) and finally, a more traditional band-playing-instruments approach on 2007′s haunting Shadows of the Sun.

Ulver‘s latest record, Wars of the Roses, adds multi-instrumentalist Daniel O’Sullivan (Guapo, Æthenor, Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses etc.) to the lineup and they are now a seamless amalgamation of the enormous spectrum of sounds that they have prospected during the last decade. It promises to be a wild musical ride at their 1967-performance, we can hardly wait!

Justin K Broadrick will be Artist in Residence at Roadburn Festival 2012. The resonance of Broadrick’s body of work — whether it’s with Birmingham grindcore godfathers Napalm Death, Head of David (1980s cult heroes), The Fall of Because, Godflesh, Jesu (most recently) or his numerous side projects — can be heard and felt through the entire festival and many of the bands invited to perform.

Broadrick’s distinctive style involves coupling minimalistic drones with melodic, darkly layered, psychedelic guitar textures. He has an obvious willingness to experiment, as his influences range from shoegaze to dark ambient, from grindcore to industrial, from drum ‘n bass to power electronics. The styles he manifests by creating all-encompassing, yet devastatingly claustrophobic visions from minimalist means are all elements whose fumes have pervaded countless different acts at Roadburn over our many years.

Justin K Broadrick will carry on a tradition that began in 2010 with Enslaved (performing the Armageddon Concerto together with Shining, Norway as part of their residency), followed by Circle in 2011. Justin will play 3 different sets during Roadburn Festival 2012, starting off as White Static Demon vs JK Flesh on Thursday, April 12 at the Midi Theatre. That is Broadrick’s power electronics project followed by JK FLESH, his heavy electronic based project which encompasses dissonant textures coupled with post hip hop / dubstep / drum and bass stylings

On Friday, April 13th, Justin will perform as Final. Initially started as a two-piece punk band with a drummachine in 1982, the group recorded its first demo when Broadrick was thirteen years old. The project developed to embrace electronics and dark ambient throughout the years. Justin revived Final by himself in 1993.

Broadrick’s residency will lead into his main project, Jesu, performing on Saturday, April 14th. Named after the last song on the final Godflesh release (Hymns), Jesu (i.e. Broadrick) quickly got established as one of the seminal post-rock pioneers. Since the release of 2006’s Silver EP, which gained comparisons to My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, Broadrick’s sound evolved further into pop and indie sounds, while maintaining the claustrophobic sonic density his work is renowned for

AUN are a Montreal-based duo that melt the boundaries between psychedelic, ambient and doomgaze music, creating vast ethereal sound-canvases of blurred and cracked solar eclipses, giant mechanical dragonflies flying in huge subterranean caverns, and sub-orbital aerial photographs of ocean wave patterns. Joining AUN on percussion and second guitar, Frédéric Arbour (Visions and head of the Cyclic Law label).

Bob Wayne

Over the years, Roadburn has evolved to encompass a vast range of music styles and genres. Rather than pursue diversity for diversity’s sake, however, the idea has always been to put together an interesting and exciting festival. Now we are about to push the sonic boundaries once again by welcoming outlaw country hero Bob Wayne (and his band the Outlaw Carnies) to the 2012 edition of our festival.

Having done time with Hank Williams III not only as a guitar tech and opening act but also on Hank III’s version of his song ‘Working Man’, Bob Wayne is the real deal. His fans include Roadburn stalwart Scott Kelly and
Lamb of God’s Randy Blythe. A tireless road warrior, Wayne has toured with all sorts of metal and sludge bands. His music may be pure country, but lyrically speaking his songs share the kind of unvarnished view on life
expressed by bands more readily associated with Roadburn.

One listen to this tattooed desperado’s Outlaw Carnie will confirm that he fits the bill. Bob Wayne and The Outlaw Carnies will play on Saturday, 14 April at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Tombs

Brooklyn’s Tombs bears the mark of total devastation. On the latest album, Path of Totality, Tombs not only evoke the classic sound and feel of black metal in its finest hour they also explore their disparate UK post-punk influences. And keep things incredibly listenable. The band has marched ahead boldly with the sound of impending doom since their inception and Path is endowed with all of the primordial intensity that is a hallmark of the aforementioned genres.

However, Tombs reach far beyond the ritual sounds of the past with an abundance of tonal variation. The gut-wrenching vocals and furious blastbeasts are interwoven with a dark and brooding atmospheric moodiness, making Tombs one of the finest heavy bands in the world.

Tombs will appear on Saturday, April 14th, 2012 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Making their fourth appearance in 5 years at the festival, it looks like Japan’s serial-killer-obsessed seekers of the almighty riff Church of Misery are poised to become the offficial Roadburn house band. All joking aside, Church of Misery were among THE highlights of the previous Roadburn festivals (even the main stage almost proved way to small for them), and Roadburn 2012 will mark their triumphant return, on the main stage again (of course!), together with Sleep and The Obsessed on Saturday, April 14th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Los Angeles based psychedelic rock quintet Ancestors will be making a highly anticipated return to Roadburn for the 2012 Festival. On their latest EP, Invisible White, Ancestors tamped down their surging stoner rock leanings in favour of a more cinematic approach with long moog / modular synth workouts very much reminiscent of Pink Floyd circa Meddle and Live at Pompeii. Charting a new course for the band’s progressive, colourful sounds, Ancestors will get the chance to reprise their stunning 2010 Roadburn performance, this time supporting the release of a new, much anticipated album. Ancestors will play on Thursday, April 14th at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland.

Sweden’s Horisont will return to Roadburn after their highly acclaimed 2010 performance. Unfortunately, they ended up going on at the same time as Witchcraft due to last-minute timetable changes (don’t mention the
volcano!) and many people missed it. This time, Horisont will play the Green Room instead of the Bat Cave on Thursday, April 12th at the 013 venue.

If you are an avid heavy 70s aficionado you will definitely dig Sweden’s Horisont. They excel at crafting old school bluesy hard rock influenced by the likes of Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath and November. The fact that the lyrics are sung in Swedish and English adds to band’s appeal. Horisont’s debut album Tva Sidor av Horisonten (“Two Sides of Horisont”) easily ranks among the very best stoner rock albums of 2009 and earned them lots of new fans and a deal with Rise Above Records, which will be releasing their new album.

We’re excited to announce that seminal instru-metal pioneers Pelican have been added to the lineup of Roadburn 2012. Pelican last played Roadburn in the Green Room back in 2007, and will now appear on our main stage as part of their first European tour in several years.

Pelican is a monument to the RIFF. A glorious, majestic Riff that crashes down upon you in its relentless energy. Seeking, probing, moving, changing, resolving and reforming. A totemic monolith of electric guitar melody overlayed with countermelody, feinting and ducking the rhythm one moment and embracing it in the next… a force as undeniable as a flash flood… building and churning and frothing into a frenzy. To try and deny this energy is not just futile, it is foolish. You must meet this force with force, head on, squared up, and fully prepared to be taken wherever Pelican decides to take you.

We’re very pleased to announce that Black Breath and Celeste are the latest confirmed acts for Voivod‘s Au-delà du Réel at Roadburn 2012. They will join Anekdoten, Aun, Dopethrone and YOB on Friday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Black Breath will be bringing blackened death ‘n roll straight from Seattle to Voivod‘s Au-delà du Réel. Black Breath combine infectious rock riffs and black / death metal in a way that is reminiscent of a high-velocity
Entombed or a rock ‘n roll version of Dissection. They deliver their catchy and intense brand of metal with an absolutely furious live assault, sure to leave a lasting impression on your mind and body.

A full-on assault, with nary a let-up in its unrelenting fury, Celeste plays a mix of sludge / post-hardcore with a pinch of modern black metal and doom mixed in. The band excels at erecting a deafening wall of hi-freq guitar-scree with a muscular bass undertow and blistering drummage, used most effectively on their much-acclaimed slab of nihilism, Morte(s) Nee(s).

Unlike their fellow countrymen Alcest or Les Dicrets, Celeste is devoid of romanticism, their brutal, fucked-up approach is not poetry, but a primal tool to harness the darker emotions that we breed ― Celeste is a combat drug, underpinned by playing in total darkness, only using red headlights and a strobe for their bleak performances.

Led by Mike Scheidt’s crushing doom riffage and relentless stomp, psychedelic doom metal giants YOB will return to Roadburn Festival 2012 for two one-off performances, each time performing an album in it’s entirety. YOB was originally scheduled to play the 2011 festival, but their European tour got postponed til September / October, regrettably forcing the band to cancel.

Now, YOB has been personally invited by Voivod for Au-delà du Réel at Roadburn 2012. For their first show, they will be playing their seminal album, The Unreal Never Lived, on Friday, April 13th at Au-delà du Réel, and then in order to reach the greatest of heights (and doom depths), they will follow up by performing Catharsis in full at the additional Afterburner event on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Mike Scheidt comments: “YOB is beyond thrilled to announce that Voivod has invited us to play their curated day at Roadburn 2012. Speaking for myself, I grew up with Voivod’s music. Voivod - Dimension Hatröss сэт

As curator for the 17th edition of the Roadburn Festival, Voivod will transport you into Dimension Hatröss as part of their special headline show during the Au-delà du Réel event on Friday, April 13, 2012. As if the promise of the band’s classic fourth album in its entirety performed live for the first time ever wasn’t enough, the set will conclude with a not-to-be-missed surprise.

Progressive thrash? Thrashing prog? Call it what you like, Dimension Hatröss is a rarity: a concept album that stands the test of time. In fact, the original storyline has been eclipsed by reality, rendering it not so much a fantastic sci-fi trip as an uncomfortably prescient account of the world today. Divided into eight chapters, the album covers everything from the quest to create a utopian society in the face of technocratic and theocratic governments to terrorism and mind control. Plus, it rocks! It rocks in that uniquely hypnotic flight of the space bumblebee way that hums Voivod! at every dissonant turn.

In the book Worlds Away, drummer and artist Michel “Away” Langevin fondly recalls: “…around the era of Dimension Hatross, the music was so complicated we almost didn’t have any interaction with the crowd anymore because we were concentrating so hard on our instruments.”

Today, blower bass maestro Jean-Yves “Blacky” Theriault interacts with the crowd to the point of jumping into the fray mid-song without missing a beat, while consummate frontman Denis “Snake” Belanger adds theatrics. And anyone who witnessed one or more of their blistering shows during the 2011 European tour can testify that guitarist Dan “Chewy” Mongrain positively thrives on the complexity originally crafted by the late great Denis “Piggy” D’Amour.

But what exactly is a Hatröss? In a 1988 interview with Sounds, Away explained: “‘Hatross’ is a word I created from the English word ‘hate’ and the French word ‘atroce,’ from which ‘atrocity’ is derived.” He added, “The music had to be a bit weird for this album, although we kept the heaviness of it.”

из более старых подтверждений, конечно порадивали D.I.S. (хотя я в раздумии, ехать ли на афтер в этом году...), Church of Misery (но бля, я их видел уже 3 раза за последние несколько лет; хотелось бы чего-то новенького... хотя, они, конечно, зверски пиздаты живьём!), Horisont (пропустил в 2010 или когда они там были), ну и наверное больше всего порадовали Christian Mistress (думаю, доставляют живьём неплохо)

We’re really excited to announce that Lord Vicar, Orchid and Sigiriya have been added to the line-up for Roadburn festival 2012, set for Thursday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Faithfully following in the footsteps of Saint Vitus, Trouble, Witchfinder General, Pentagram and The Obsessed, Finland’s Lord Vicar boasts an impeccable doom pedigree with Kimi “Peter Vicar” Kärki (Orne, ex-Reverend Bizarre) on guitar and Christian “Chritus” Lindersson (ex-Saint Vitus, ex-Count Raven and Terra Firma) on vocals. The band plays the most arcane form of metal the way it was meant to be: full of intensity, savagery, heaviness and force, underpinned by titanic riffs and vintage hyperborean grooves.
Lord Vicar is one of Europe’s leading traditional doom bands and their sophomore album, Sign of Osiris, is way more ambitious than the first full-length, Fear No Pain, both in terms of musical diversity and the overarching theme of violence.

The Bay Area’s Orchid are true masters of recreating the Sabbath vibe circa 1970-73, replete with heavy riffage, psychedelic synth embellishments and droning eerie atmospheres. Even the production has that signature sound of the heavy Seventies. It would be easy to convince an unwitting listener that Orchid’s debut full-length, Capricorn, was in fact a long-lost Sabbath album that had never been released or widely documented. Seriously, Orchid worships at the church of Black Sabbath full bore! We predict that fans of heavy, retro occult and even black metal will dig them. In fact, we trust that everyone at Roadburn will dig them. Hail to THEE RIFF!

Eight years after the demise of Welsh stoner rock outfit Acrimony, a new band is born: Sigiriya. Having left the temples of deepest space, four of the five original members of Acrimony have joined forces to deliver a crunchier sound that signals a departure from the psychedelia and stoner caravan excursions of yore. Stuart O’Hara (ex-Iron Monkey) leads the way with thickened riffs with vocalist Dorian Walters riding the formidable grooves while bassist Paul “Mead” Bidmead and drummer Darren Ivey inject a surprisingly metallic feel to the band’s tremor-inducing sonics.
Sigiriya’s debut album, Return to Earth, sports an intense dirty sound with elements of boogie, classic rock and even crust. The result is a mighty rumble with the power to shake their native Black Mountains to the very core of the planet. Long live Sigiriya!

Hammers of Misfortune

We’re excited to announce that Hammers of Misfortune have been confirmed for the Thursday Roadburn date, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Led by the driven, outspoken John Cobbett (also of Ludicra fame), San Francisco, CA-based progressive metal band Hammers of Misfortune borrow elements from hard rock and folk, doom and thrash, and amalgamates those elements into a sound of their own. Whatever style they borrow from, or whichever tools they decide suit the work, they morph them effortlesly into their own aesthetic. At the end of the day, Hammers of Misfortune are the result of an unflinching artistic vision, and always sound exactly like themselves.

The layered male and female vocals are paired beautifully with the incredibly complex guitar work; the riffs give way to intricate, plaintive solos; the sophisticated keyboards can be nimble and playful or wistful and emotional as their songs dictate. As long time fans of the band, we are ecstatic that they will be playing a rare live show and bringing their totally unique musical vision to the festival. Last year’s Der Freiwillige Bettler was the strongest album of the bands career and a truly groundbreaking album that ripped up any neat and tidy genre classifications by blurring the lines of black metal, doom and ambient into a potent, highly original style of metal.

Purson

We are ecstatic to announce that London-based gothic psychedelia newcomers Purson have been added to the line-up for Roadburn Festival 2012. Named after a demon and fronted by the bewitching Rosalie Cunningham, Purson is the latest psychedelic proto-doom band with a mesmerizing female vocalist to cast a spell over everyone who hears them.

With elements of ’70s progressive and heavy rock, Purson is in league with Blood Ceremony and Jex Thoth, conjuring visions of Hammer horror and pagan rituals. What sets them apart are the incredibly catchy pop-like

It only took a couple of songs on Soundcloud / Facebook to capture the attention of illustrious Rise Above Records (a 7″ and a full-length are in the works) and Darkthrone’s Fenriz, one of metal’s favorite arbiters of taste, made them band of the week!

We at Roadburn were instant converts, too, spinning those four tracks over and over again, only to wake up screaming, “Must. Have. Purson. NOW!” We are certain that by the time Purson takes the stage at Roadburn 2012 on Saturday, April 14th all of you will be under their sweetly demonic spell, too. Consider yourself warned!

The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation на афтере

Using organic improvisational techniques, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation are an improv sideline of members of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble (who were among the absolute highlights of this years festival). Coming at their improvised ambient jazz from a more drone/doom-informed angle than that of their parental unit, TMFDJC revolves around the plaintive, occasionally eerie and often surprising subtle trombone of Hilary Jeffery as a lead instrument for the group’s cinematic soundscapes.

Squelchy, spaced-out and jittery, the echoing looped soundbed, spectral violin, humming guitar and dense, piercing electronics add a deep hypnotic feel to the colossal drone created by all the musicians as they break loose from whatever space, time or dimension they may find themselves.

After the seductive and slightly erotic Succubus soundtrack, and Anthropomorphic, a tryptich of improv recordings made during 2010, we can only guess what kind the sound and atmosphere, as well as movie, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation will conceive at the Roadburn Festival Afterburner on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Barn Owl

We’re thrilled to announce that Bay Area’s Barn Owl has been confirmed for Roadburn Festival 2012, playing the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland on Friday, April 13th.

Barn Owl is guitarist Jon Porras and guitarist Evan K. Caminiti. Together they create dialogue between imagination and reality through wandering soundscapes, using reverb, delay, distortion, feedback, and effects pedals to create humming sounds that often have South Asian and Middle Eastern tonalities. Like similar ambient guitar and drone metal contemporaries OM, Sunn O))) and Earth, Barn Owl‘s approach to making music hearkens back to minimalist composers Terry Riley, Steve Reich and Philip Glass.

The duo’s intertwining guitars, jumping from major and minor note progressions to deep and dark drones. The movement and patterns of their soundscapes conjure up images of bleak and barren places or wordless avant-garde films about desolate surroundings. Barn Owl‘s latest album, the much-acclaimed Lost in the Glare, is a dreamy affair, quiet and meditative at times, but also explosive with loud power strikes, evoking a spiritual, hypnotic state of mind.

End of Level Boss

Continuing in their all-consuming search for twisted riffs and rhythms, UK based End of Level Boss return to the Roadburn festival for the first time since their debut appearance in 2006. Joining original vocalist / guitarist Harry Armstrong (ex-Hangnail / Decomposed) this updated line up of the retro-progressive riff worshipers features Peter Theobalds (ex-Akercocke / Gonga) on bass, Neil Grant (ex-RAAR) on drums, and ex-Sloth guitarist Roland Scriver on lead guitars and ever expanding effects. This coming together of styles has made EOLB an angrier, dirtier beast, as shown on their latest album Eklectric – recorded live to tape across 4 short winter days at the end of 2010.

Formed in 2003, End of Level Boss was created to explore a need for off-kilter riffs and mishapen rhythms, forced into a headnodding, footstomping marriage with burned out, unhinged groove. This incarnation of the band have uncovered a mutual need to blend the familiar with the bizzare, resulting in the first EOLB album to be written collectively, through intensive jam sessions, by the entire band.

Previously described as “Kyuss meets King Crimson”, EOLB have taken that recipe and dragged it, kicking and screaming, into an all new, cold and raw direction. Realising this natural progression resulted in the band attacking their latest recording with a deliberate desire to capture the live, punkier elements of Motorhead and Voivod – a band worshiped by all members of EOLB, making their appearance at 2012′s Voivod curated Au-delà du Réel on Friday, April 13th a monumental occasion for these British sound shifters.
