Driveway Speeding are Jez (lute), Jim (marimba) and Tim (euphonium). We were born in a Brighton rehearsal studio during the bitterly cold winter of 2002-03, following a four-year gestation period. We like music, and are especially fond of Broccoli, Hooton 3 Car, Jawbreaker, Leatherface and Status Quo.
All three members played in a short-lived (circa 1999) pop-punk band named RANGER SMITH, which survived just long enough to release a split 7" on RUMBLESTRIP RECORDS and play half a dozen gigs. Geographical differences drove us apart when bass player Matt left to run a 20,000 hectare sheep station in New Zealand.
Traumatised by the break-up, Jez recuperated in a private Newcastle clinic. Between face-packs, he played drums with OHNO EXPRESS (later guitar for SERVO) and drove a couple of touring US bands around Europe. Jim stayed in Basingstoke and swotted for his 11 plus exam, while Tim was playing at being grown-up and building his personal fortune in London. Christmas 2000 (with Jez's brief fling with rock and roll now over) found our heroes together again, reminiscing about their moment of fame at the top of the vibrant Basingstoke punk scene. Could they ever scale those dizzy heights again?
For the next 18 months things moved slowly. Jez and Tim wrote and 4-tracked a handful of songs in Tim's London penthouse, and talked about relocating to the same town. Jim was the obvious choice to replace the drum machine, having spent the previous couple of years honing his skills in 9:8 with a jazz quartet on hospital radio.
In November 2002 we made it, at long last, to Brighton - the greatest town on God's green earth. After writing and over-rehearsing a set, we started playing in front of other people in early 2004. Some of them did not leave. Undeterred by a couple of right stinkers, we have since played shows numbering well into the double figures(!!). With an absurd number of copies of our new EP to distribute to the masses, we will be playing as frequently as kind-hearted promoters will permit in 2005.
