"TORN APART are among the current wave of powerviolence-style fast hardcore bands currently emerging from Leeds. Together for just over a year they've already been through some fairly drastic lineup changes, with Harry (vocals) and Sam (guitar) remaining the only original members.
TORN APART have clearly never heard of saving the best to last, and the 7" opens with their best track, SELF LOATHING. Without a doubt this is the strongest exhibition of songwriting on the release, the slower first riff proving especially memorable. Although only clocking a total of around 5 minutes, there is enough variety in the riffs to drag the track list out, even if the bulk of the release centres heavily around one vibe (NEGATIVE APPROACH on anabolic steroids).
Lyrical topics pretty exclusively deal with despair and misanthropy, with the exception of the misogynistically titled KILL WEMON, based on the David Berkowitz murders. Fairly standard stuff, but although misanthropy may be nothing new to hardcore, but Torn Apart's debut reminds us, if it's not broke, don't fix it.
