WWWW interview in zoomdoom zine!!


A couple of months ago I did an Email interview for Belarusian fanzine Zoomdoom which is done by a cool chap called Arkadiy, who is obsessed with cats. His band Me4tez is a lovely shower of lo-fi powerviolence awesomeness, and are in our top friends so add add add.

The zine is published in glorious Russian, and anyone cool enough to buy the most recent issue will have the pleasure of reading this wonderful exchange between myself and Arkadiy, accompanied by photos of Wheelchair, Jonny Greenwood and his toy collection, my cat posing uncomfortably for a photo with his paws wrapped round a bottle of stella, and the highlights of my pez collection.

For the English speakers among us, I have tried to piece together this bizzare interview, and on rereading it I was very disappointed at how humourless and dull I was in it. Luckily, all future interviews will be conducted with my trusty colleague Bobby at my side, and will consequently be 88% more interesting and funny. We did a rad one for Ploppy Pants that should be coming out soon, so you'll see for yourselves.




*what..s difference between powerviolebce from scotland and power violence from other places?
There aren't any other powerviolence bands from Scotland except Shank, but they're awesome! I guess the main difference is that we eat haggis and shortbread and drink irn bru.

*movies -
your opinion on such characters
-bond. james bond. (and actors from sean connery to daniel craig)
James Bond... wow. Yeah I love them all, even the shit ones. The new one was really good, so yeah, I like Daniel Craig. Sean Connery is a good actor, but is about as Scottish as Paris Hilton. Fucker won't touch Scotland with a barge-pole!!

I only saw the first one, it was a bit weird. Not sure! :S

*movies at all (did you watch 'the big lebowski'?)
Yeah the Big Lebowski is good but quite overrated in my opinion! My favourite movie is Carrie. My favourite new movie is There Will Be Blood. I like the atmosphere in both of them! I like movies with awesome soundtracks!

*alcohol?
Plenty yeah! On the subject of the Big Lebowski, I love White Russians!! Beautiful! Usually stick to beer and wine though!

*ok.. so as about james band do you drink martini?
No, I never really drink martini. I think you have to be really cool to carry it off to be honest!

*you mentioned napalm death as your favorite.. do you like them last cds? or you still hold rememrance of 'scum' and 'from enslavement..'?
Yeah, I do like their newer stuff, especially Enemy of the Music Business, that shit's solid!! But yeah, u can't really beat Scum. I'm too young to remember it coming out, but clearly it was the most mental thing going back then, so hats off to them!!

*how important image (clothes, haircuts) for band?
Irrelevant!! I would prefer to see a band actively reject the notion of "image" but if I like a bands music and they have trendy clothes/hair then that's not gonna stop me listening to them!!

* and what mean band name.. really i can..t get any ideas about it?))
Doesn't have any real meaning, I like saying it. I like telling people that's what my band's called.

*and what reaction from people when you saying band name?
I don't know, I think it confuses people, which is a good thing. No-one has been offended which I'm glad about.

*soundtracks.. i believe music for 'there will be blood' (by the way in russia this movie was released as 'the oil')) - 'there will be blood' is to hard to understand for average movie consumer))..) was written by radiohead guitar player? do you like this band?
The oil! That's good! Although I do prefer There Will Be Blood as a title. Yeah, it was Jonny Greenwood, and I was very surprised when I found out it was him! I've never been a huge Radiohead fan although I like some of their older stuff. They're not a bad band but I get sick of people talking about them like they're the only interesting band on the planet.

*hhh!! and about paper mags and john greenwood)) - just found that picture of him (it was in Q magazine back from 1995) with toy dinosaurus and here is picture of my toys)) did you had/have such toys? or something))?
Yes, I used to love toys! I'm a massive child, I love video games and stuff like that. I also have a badass pez collection!

*being duo line up is ok for you? what you think about such duo like
the white stripes? i remind them cause i just start watching last 007
movie - and here is title song by jack white))

Well, I think being a duo is the best thing for us. The less people
there are, the more pure the musical vision can be. It makes things
easier to organise too. We've never really had any musical
disagreements yet and I think that only comes when you have 3 or more
members in a band. The White Stripes are cool, I don't listen to them
much but I respect what they do. Jack White's Bond theme was a bit odd
though!


*next about image do you..re wear band tshirs? do you have ones for wwww?
Yeah, I've got loads of band shirts! To me it's an important part of being a music fan, publicly supporting a band by buying and wearing their shirt. I've got an awesome Faith no More tour shirt from 1992 that was my brothers! I used to love the Nasum shirt with "Grind your Mind" written on the back, I wore that a lot when I was at school. No WWWW shirts yet, although it's something I'd definitely like to get done soon!

*as i hear about scotland and 'scene' first things is ploppy pants zine.. you read it.. do you read zines at all?
Aaah well I am aware of Ploppy Pants, I had a message from the guy who makes it the other week so we may be doing an interview for an upcoming issue. I have to say though, to my shame I don't read zines, although that's not to say I wouldn't like to! It's just that they are quite difficult to get hold of when you consider there's so much cool stuff on the internet right at your fingertips. I've been listening to extreme music for ages now, but I've never really explored the "scene" aspect in Scotland. That was one of the reasons I formed this band, to see what kind of a scene Scotland really has!

*but if you have not paper zines what do you read in toilet?))
Oh, I read Viz. It's a British comic, for adults. It's really funny, very dirty and sarcastic, and sometimes pretty clever too!

*do you have cats or any pet? how you thing what is best name for cat? how about wheelchair wheelchair wheelchair wheelchair?))
When I was 12 one of my friend's cats had kittens so we took 2 of them. I called them Manson (in my defence Marilyn Manson wasn't quite as shit back in those days) and Rousset, after Hearts FCs then goalkeeper, the French legend Gilles Rousset. My Mum and Dad still have them, except they're now lazy and fat (the cats, not my Mum and Dad). At the moment I don't have any pets, but if I got 2 cats now I would give them boring human names like Bill or Ryan. Not sure WWWW would be a good name for a cat, although it would be cool if you had 4 cats, and just called each one "wheelchair". then when you were calling them for dinner you could shout "Wheelchair! Wheelchair! Wheelchair! Wheelchair! That would be cool.
