Diagonal - молодая группа из города Brighton, United Kingdom черпающая свое вдохновление в музыке конца 60-х/начала 70-х и котрую уже успели прозвать "ярчайшей надеждой прог-рока". Играют великолепную смесь винтажного прог и джаз-рока - в звучании легко угадываются King Crimson и Khan. Несмотря на то, что группа довольно молодая они уже успели выступить в 2008-м на культовом для раздела Distorted фестивале Roadburn. Свой дебютный альбом выпустили на сэйбле Ли Дориана Rise Above.

Замечательная пластинка !
Более спокойная, меланхоличная, зрелая, что ли.
Я бы сказал, что "Arc" - это смесь первых альбомов Диагонали с первым альбомом Baron.
В моём персональном топчике поборется за первое место с "The Crucible" (Motorpsycho).
P.S. Кстати, работа над четвёртым альбомом уже началась .

From Klaus Schulze to the ECM sound, some of the most transcendent music can seem simultaneously glacial and warm. ‘Irian Jaya’ achieves this over four spacious pieces recorded in 2016. Alex Crispin and Nick Whittaker have known each other for three decades, two of which have been spent making music together. This journey has taken them from bedroom recordings in their childhood home town, via the Brighton progressive rock band, Diagonal, and Whittaker’s guest appearances on Crispin’s Baron albums, to the latter’s studio in Nottingham where they began life as a duo.

The album's sound is singularly personal but the debts to Harold Budd, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Steve Roach and Paul Horn are lovingly paid. Crispin plays metallophone and synthesisers, providing a bedrock for 'Irian Jaya' that is as sensitive as it is esoteric: one moment evoking the momentousness of sacred prayer bells in ‘Escarpment’, the next, toy-box hypnosis in ‘Mesa’. Whittaker’s intimate saxophone slow waltzes above this, percolating distant cloudiness in ‘Equinoctial Storms’, and hazy, earnest lyricism in ‘Tephra’. The latter features percussion from both members alongside Crispin's 12-string guitar, in a sensuous mise en scene of tropical ambient new age jazz.

Breaking with the tradition of leaving it half a decade between releases, Diagonal are back a mere 18 months after their last album Arc.

“4” was started 2019 but something got in the way of the intended completion in 2020.... Having decided to push on recording parts as individuals opposed to together as a group this new album is almost ready to share with you all.

In conjunction with Bandcamp Friday (the regular day when BC waives their 10% fee on sales) we have released a pre-order to help with funding for the physical formats - it will also help us gauge order quantities in order to get production scheduled. As a self release it’s important we get that right.

The Orange vinyl will be strictly limited to 100 units so get in quick if that is your bag!

- When will it be ready?

The full album is getting final overdubs and being is mixed as we speak. We anticipate that once mastering and manufacture is complete the release will likely be summer/autumn 2021.

We must be upfront though. As we have all learned this year everything is subject to change and delay in these uncertain times, the release date we have used is relatively arbitrary and limited by Bandcamp so its more realistic to assume the album will be ready for shipping in Spring/Summer.

Fifth Daughter are new to Fruits de Mer, 'Stellar Season' is their first LP; they describe themselves as progressive/psychedelic rock and their music as an "eclectic mix of prog, psych and acid folk, very much inspired by the likes of Jade Warrior, Jimmie Spheeris, VdGG and Incredible String Band"...that got my immediate attention, hopefully it's got yours too...
They are a duo - Nicholas Whittaker and James Howarth; Nick is best known as a member of the highly-rated progressive rock band Diagonal, while James was a member of Running Dogs, and has collaborated with the KLF and Martin "Youth" Glover; his last live performance was a headlining slot at Ronnie Scott's, on bass.

'Stellar Season' was conceived as a loose concept album during one of the COVID lockdowns, with Whittaker sketching out the basics of a story about a rural society far from Earth whose obsession with summer leads to an endless day that they soon regret, learning to appreciate the rhythm of the seasons in the process.
Knowing the talent of his old friend as a songwriter and bassist, Whittaker brought Howarth in to collaborate on the songs. The recordings were completed over several sessions from 2021 to 2023. The album features fellow Diagonal band members Luke Foster and Dave Wileman as well as ambient guitarist Will Howes.
