Old Temple is a label that I have come to know for finding some great older material that I may have never otherwise heard, and re-releasing it for this generation of black metallers (as unworthy as most of this generation is.) However, I don't think releasing a CD in a 7" sleeve was the brightest or most original idea. There's nothing for the CD to hold onto and it more or less flops everywhere and out of the packaging, could easily be broken or lost, etc. I suppose if you love any of the three artists on this split / collection though that you'll just have to live with it as I am. I have personally been a long-time listener of Sweden's Shining and believe that they are one of the few depressive black metal acts out there today whom actually know how to play their instruments and have a unique image (though black metal is not by any means a fucking fashion show.) This would be my first experience with Funeral Dirge, Kvarforth's original band from the late 90's, and Mrok, a dark ambient project that I can't seem to find much of anything about except for the entity behind the music's name, Orias.
The big surprise to me on this album wasn't either of the bands everyone is wanting to hear, but rather Mrok. While both the prologue and epilogue were fine pieces of dark ambient music, the Realms of Death interlude completely blew me on my ass. With dark ambience flowing through the background underneath some lo-fi dark and depressive piano melodies, this track really packs a punch to the atmosphere that Shining had left behind with you, and the oncoming storm that Funeral Dirge had to offer. Hopefully this artist will release more information about himself in the near future, or someone will educate me on the person himself, because this track was definitely something special.
Shining, as to be expected, definitely held up the better half of this split. The atmosphere these foul creatures always manage to create is unique to their own sound and filled with a despair that few others ever manage to emit. I have always been impressed with the stories I hear behind the vocalist's live performance as well, though I can't say I really believe he goes through such antics without either the help of some hardcore drugs or losing his mental stability with the music. We've all heard about the infamous gig involving Manic from Mayhem by now, so there's really no need to go into detail about it. The music that was featured on this half of the split though is definitely some of Shining's best material. From what I understand, you can only find one track of the original EP off of the Australian re-release of I - Within Deep Dark Chambers. Other than that, if you don't get this release, you're more or less fucked as far as ever hearing them except for digital files which never do the music justice. [Editor's Note: Apparently these tracks are also available on the "Through Years of Oppression" collection.]
Funeral Dirge's side was actually quite disappointing given what Shining has been able to create in recent memory. Given the fact that the band only released one EP in the late 90's, I guess I can't really complain, but the music just isn't nearly what Shining became. Funeral Dige played a much more doomy / laid back sounding style of black metal without much atmosphere at all. The tracks featured just seemed uninspired and unimportant...no feeling at all to the music. Old school black metal fans may find this side of the release particularly fruitful though. Despite the problems with the packaging and the disappointment in the Funeral Dirge side, this release really was incredible. It gives you a look into the beginnings of Shining's career (except for the 300 of you lucky bastards who managed to grab the 7" when it was still available), and the release also gives us a glimpse into one of the best, though completely unknown, dark ambient artists that I have heard in my time.
